![]() ![]() Despite an attempt by the Chief Draughtsman, Joe Smith (?) to persuade him to stay, and offering him the opportunity to work with Mitchell’s “right-hand man” Arthur Shirval, Davis resigned in 1930, as he had already accepted an offer from Westlands in Yeovil and felt he ought to honour this. Whilst in the erecting shop he applied to join the Drawing Office, achieving his ambition in 1929 only to be disappointed when he was placed in the Modifications Department rather than actually doing design work. For the next four years he worked on the shop floor of the Works, gradually progressing from a “Handy Lad” through to working on the lathes in the machine shop before moving to the erecting shop where he helped put together aircraft like the Swan, Southampton and Seagull flying boats. ![]() ![]() in 1925 as a seventeen year old apprentice. Eric John Davis, always known to his friends and colleagues as “Jack”, was born in Winchester Road, Southampton in 1908 and joined Supermarine Aviation Ltd. ![]()
